Caves and carvings

22nd June 2015

Caithness caves

My home town of Thurso has a series of caves at the West end of the towns beach. Tidal, and subject to extreme weather, they nevertheless have a series of carvings and workings that have survived centuries of storms.

Two caves in particular are covered in Victorian era graffiti, albeit of the serious carved variety. I suspect a legacy of this part of Scotland’s history in stoneware.

Caithness Flagstone indeed.

Bad moon rising

7th January 2015

Bad moon riising

Snatched as a got home from work last night, just as the rice was on. Twelve minutes to grab the camera and tripod, run to the beach, set up, try a shot, move, try a second shot, then run home just as the pinger was going. I could have done with being 10 mins later, so the moon was centred, and try some ND filters to reduce the “moon burn”, but hey not bad, IMHO.

Thurso Beach 10/12/14

24th December 2014

Thurso beach 10/12/14

Just after 8:00 in the morning, on the day of the “weather bomb” in the Highlands. Walking Magnus’s dog along the esplanade. The camera is balanced on the beach railings on a two second delay. The camera was set on 100 iso to get maximum exposure, but that’s all I had time for as it was blowing a gale, and the dog was not happy being out the in the wind and the rain. Pretty happy with the result though, except the lights of Scrabster Harbour are far too intrusive.

Strange yellows

Strange yellows

A sunset shot from 2012 – one that demonstrates the strange colours that come out from your camera when you least expect it.

Quiet waves

12th January 2014

Faint waves and foam

I’ve been totally floored by a bad head cold, which turned into tonsillitis, for the past few days. One of those colds where you know exactly when and where you caught it, from a senior Scottish Government civil servant on day two after the holidays – to her credit she told me to stay back and would not even shake hands, but within two hours on the train home I was all sweaty and shivering. So five days of sneezing, snuffling, sore bones, sleepless nights.

The worst part is not being even able to take my wee walk along the beach in the morning. So this photo from December will just have to do.
